World / Map Generation

When the game has to generate a new world, it "invokes" (in computer programming jargon) an algorithm. This algorithm emits a pseudo-random value that is used to determine what the map will look like. However, the algorithm will always end up emitting the same value if the initial value (the seed) that the algorithm uses is always the same. This is the reason why seeds exist (to easily generate totally different maps from each other).

When the map generation algorithm is updated, the same seed will stop generating the same terrain. This is why in some different versions of the game, the same seed does not give rise to the same world.

The seed of a world is established when the world is created. By default, the seed is determined automatically (in which case the game uses the system time for the seed), but it can also be set manually. You can set and reuse a seed to replay that world, or you can also use a known seed to play the same world as another player. A number or a word / phrase can also be used, including negative values.

If the seed or generator changes in a saved world, the new chunks will be based on the new seed, and will not match those of the old seed (this phenomenon was widely observed with Adventure Mode). Chunks removed can be regenerated if the seed and generator remain the same, but will change if either one changes.

It is important to note that since the seeds are simply random values ​​read by an algorithm and not really names of different worlds, using a certain seed will not necessarily generate a world with any relation to the value of the seed. For example, using a biome name as a seed will not necessarily generate a world with more land than that biome.

Technical Information

The Java String.hashCode () function is used to generate a numeric seed in case a word / phrase is used. This restricts the game to a subset of the possible worlds (approximately 4 billion), due to the type of data used. To access the total set of possible worlds (approximately 18 trillion), you can use the numeric seeds directly or let Minecraft generate the seed (from system time).
