Alex crouching down.
Ducking is a mechanic that prevents a player from falling off the edges of blocks, and reduces their collision box, allowing them to enter tight spaces. This also reduces the detection field of the creatures, among other characteristics.

Realization
To crouch, one has to press the crouch key (Left Shift by default) or double-tap the crouch button, in the case of mobile devices (Bedrock Edition).
A player also automatically crouches if he enters tight spaces 1 1/2 blocks high unintentionally, as a way to prevent suffocation.

Effects
- A player is prevented from falling off the edges of the blocks if the height difference between the blocks is 5⁄8 of a block or more, which makes bending down a useful mechanic for building bridges and horizontal surfaces.
- The player will still fall if he jumps while on the edge or corner.
- The player will still fall to the ground if the block they are on, even though it also counts as the edge of the closest block to their side, is destroyed.
- The player moves slower, at a speed of 1.31m / s.
- Hostile creatures do not notice the player until the player is within 80% of the usual detection range.
- The field of view drops 1⁄8 of a block, and the character's model changes slightly. This can be seen using F5.
- The player's collision box is reduced from its 1.8 blocks in height (practically they are almost equal):
- In the Bedrock Edition, the height is 1.65 blocks, allowing movement in narrow spaces such as 1.75 (2 - 1⁄4) blocks high.
- In the Java Edition, the height is 1.5 blocks, allowing movement in tight spaces.
- No footstep sounds are presented.
- In multiplayer, a player's name appears more opaque than normal, invisible to players more than 32 blocks away, and invisible through solid blocks.
- If the player is on a ladder or creeper (including crimson creeper and distorted creeper), they stop where they are. The same mining speed is still reduced by a factor of 5.
- Players can place certain objects and / or blocks on block entities. For example, placing a hopper on a chest, a torch on a smoker, or redstone on a command block.
- Players are able to interact with the inventory of a horse, llama, donkey, mule, skeleton horse, zombie horse, or walking llama without getting on them by pressing the right mouse button while crouching by pressing the crouch key.
- Crouching prevents a player from bouncing off a slime block, resulting in fall damage if he falls from a considerable height.
- Crouching prevents magma blocks from causing damage when walked on.
- Redstone ores do not light up if a player walks crouched on them.
- Crouching causes the player to sink faster when submerged in the water.
Does not affect
- Jump height: players jump vertically equally and at the same speed. However, the horizontal movement and the distance covered with a jump combined with crouched walking is reduced.
- Farmland and crops: they will still break if you jump on them.
Curiosities
- In creative mode, if a player holds down the crouch button and then presses the space bar twice, they jump and stay at the height they jumped at and stay that way until the space bar is released. However, this is not a bug, as the crouch key is also the fly down key, so similarly pressing opposite movement keys causes the player to stay at the set height.
- In the Bedrock Edition, the player assumes the crouching position when flying down, and may further place blocks on chests, ovens, and other utility blocks in this state, suggesting that the player is actually crouching. In the Java Edition, the player does not assume the crouching position when crouching, but also does not interact with the blocks by right-clicking.
- If the player crouches immediately after running, then he moves crouching faster than a player moving crouching without first running.
