Uses
Locate strengths
An animation of an eye of ender shattering.
To locate strongholds (and the End portals they house):
- Pressing use while holding an end eye causes it to fly approximately 12 blocks in the direction of the closest fortress, traveling through the necessary blocks and leaving a trail of purple particles, the same particle effect used for the endermans and ender's chests.
- The eye leads to the chunk where a spiral staircase is located, the first room generated in the fortress.
- The center of this entry ladder is always exactly at the coordinates of chunk 4, ~, 4, although ender's eyes lead to the coordinates of chunk 8, ~, 8 (the center of the chunk).
- While more than 12 blocks from the center of the ladder chunk, the eye will travel upward to provide an easily visible indication of the horizontal direction the player should travel.
- When within 12 blocks of the center of the ladder chunk, the eye will travel downward, indicating that the player is above a fortress and must mine down.
- After two to three seconds of travel, the eye floats in the air briefly, then falls (becoming collectible again) or breaks in midair. The eye has a 20% chance of breaking. The player can throw the eye an average of five times before it breaks.
- Ender's eye fly function only works on the surface. It does nothing in the Nether, the End, custom dimensions Verify, or worlds without fortresses.
Activating portals of the End
An End portal activated with Ender's eyes.
Once an End portal is found, Ender's Eyes are required to activate it. End portals require a total of 12 ender eyes to activate, although each individual frame block has a 10% chance of containing an ender eye when spawned. The eyes can be placed on the empty End portal frames by pressing use on them until the entire ring of 12 is filled, thus activating the portal. Due to the fact that there is a 10% chance that each individual end portal frame will have an eye on it, there is a one in a billion chance that each block will have an eye, thus activating the portal even if the player does not have any. ender's eye.

Java Edition | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1.0.0 | Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3 | Added ender's eyes. | |||
Ender's eyes can be used to repair End portal frames, but repairing them does nothing. | |||||
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4 | Each eye can now be placed in an End portal frame or used to hone within a fortress. Jeb demonstrated the new uses of an eye on his live stream. [1] In the stream you could see an End portal inside a fortress with two inserted eyes. | ||||
On older worlds with chunks generated before Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3, the eyes can mistakenly lead the player to a place where there is no stronghold at all. This happens because the eyes lead to the place where a fortress should be spawned in the world seed in the current version, but prior to Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3, fortresses were spawned differently depending on the seed. Therefore, if the player saved the coordinates the eye traveled to in an old world and spawned a new world with the same seed, the player could travel to those same coordinates and find a fortress. | |||||
RC1 | The launching sound of Ender's eyes has changed. | ||||
1.3.1 | 12w21a | Ender's Eyes can now be used to craft Ender's Chests. | |||
Priest villagers buy 2-3 ender eyes for one emerald. | |||||
12w22a | Priest Villagers no longer buy Ender Eyes, but instead sell them for 7-10 Emeralds. | ||||
1.6.4 | 1.6.3-pre | Ender's eyes now lead to fortresses based on the structure data stored in the world file instead of calculating its approximate location through the world seed. Therefore, fortresses generated in old versions can still be found even if the distribution of fortresses is changed. | |||
1.8 | 14w02a | With changes made to villagers and the trading system, Cleric Villagers now sell Ender Eyes for 7–11 Emeralds, as one of their Tier III professions. | |||
1.9 | 15w41a | Eyes of ender are no longer sold by cleric villagers. | |||
15in44b | An Ender's Eye is now used to create an End crystal. | ||||

Curiosities
- When thrown in third-person view, the eyes of ender fly out from the player's feet instead of their hand.
- Before Java Edition 1.9, eyes of ender can be purchased from cleric villagers, which means players can find a stronghold and go to the End without accessing the Nether at all.
- En Bedrock Edition if the player travels beyond a certain radius (roughly 740,000 blocks), eyes of ender always point to a stronghold near spawn, even though strongholds continue to generate past this limit. If one travels to this limit, they can see eyes of ender suddenly switching direction. A similar phenomenon occurs with the /locate command.
