A iron hatch It is a block used as a horizontal door that is the size of a block. It is handled using redstone signals and cannot be opened with a right click. The hatches can only be placed on the side of a solid block. When activated, they open by turning towards the block to which they are attached. If said block is destroyed, the hatch will break, dropping the object. When placed outside, rain, water, lava and snow cannot pass through the hatch, but light can radiate through it.

Like doors, hatches can be controlled using redstone circuits. An activated redstone signal causes the hatch to open. Conversely, an unactivated redstone signal causes the hatch to close. Traps can be used as a less consistent method than doors to hold boats in a dock. It is also possible to create a distributor with a vertical succession of hatches connected with redstone. It is also possible to use them in entrances, since they also stop the horizontal movement.

Curiosities
- Some animals, like sheep, cannot jump over a block with a closed hatch at the top. This makes it possible to make pens in which animals can enter but cannot easily exit.
- Like doors, hatches are not flammable and do not burn.
- The hatches do not prevent access to the contents of a chest if they are closed just above the chest. This means that they are like any other door, and that it allows you to interact with objects that are on the other side even with the hatch closed.
- If you put a hatch in a lava block, the lava will disappear and the hatch will not burn. This makes it possible to create paths through the lava.
- The hatches can be used as ladders by placing them one on top of the other through a vertical tunnel. To go down, you have to open them, and close them to go back up.
- The hatches can be pushed by pistons if there is another block to connect to or if the block to which they are connected also moves.
- Riding on hatches placed on ice makes the player walk faster, and running on hatches on ice allows them to run faster than a wagon.
- If a hatch is opened remotely (using redstone signals) while an animal is on it, the animal will fall through the hatch. This allows an effective trap to be made in front of a vulnerable entry.
- A hatch can muffle the sound of time.
- The hatches do not block redstone signals rising below them.
- Two hatches placed in a 1x2 block opening in the open position, makes for a very narrow entrance.
