Between the beta 1.7.3 and beta 1.8 periods, Mojang started releasing trial versions (snapshots) in order to receive feedback from players, especially for bug reporting, so the official update is considered more stable. While these updates were public, they were not automatically installed with the game and were completely optional.
During the beta, these versions were under the name of "pre-release" (Pre-Release in English), after the final version 1.0.0 they received the name of "snapshot" in English.
To install a trial version, we simply download the file minecraft.jar and replace it with the file "minecraft.jar" from .minecraft / bin /, running Minecraft normally. For GNU / Linux, it is a bit more time consuming to install the trial versions.
Please note: This page is not a bug report; for this there is already this other provided by Mojang.
In Beta, these versions went under the label of "Pre-Release", the candidates submitted to the release of 1.0 as "RC #".
The post-1.0.0 weekly snapshots are named using the YYwWWx format. YY is the two-digit year, w simply means "weeks", WW is the number of the two-digit week in the year, and x is a unique identifier - starting with "a" - for when there is more than one release from the week. The new launcher will only download the development of that snapshot version as a whole. All older snapshots are stored locally. You are able to switch to other snapshots through the profile editor (New launcher only) [1]
Erik Broes (_Grum) appears in the "cover" for snapshot 13w19a through pre-release 1.6, 13w36a through pre-release 1.7, snapshots 13w47, 14w03a through 14w04b, and snapshot 14w06 and 14w08.
As of Monday, June 23, 2014, Nathan Adams (Dinnerbone) announced that Mojang will begin releasing snapshots on Wednesday instead of Thursday. [2]
