Obtaining
You can get spawn eggs in Creative or via commands. In creative mode, the player can use the choose block button (by default the middle click or the mouse wheel) on a creature to obtain its corresponding egg. Eggs are also available from the Creative Mode inventory. There are a total of 67 eggs in the Bedrock Edition and 64 in the Java Edition.
Utilization
A spawn egg is used by left clicking on any surface with it in hand. When used, the creature will appear and automatically emit a characteristic sound of it.
These eggs are not released (unlike normal eggs); rather, the player has a limit of distance of action. Hostile and neutral creatures (except wolves, polar bears, pandas, dolphins, llamas, bees, vindicators, summoners, shulkers, zoglins, hoglins, gross piglin (BE only), and piglins) spawned on Peaceful difficulty appear and disappear from the world immediately.
The surface of solid blocks is prioritized to spawn the creatures, but if there are no nearby, they can also appear in the water.
Dispensers
An egg thrown by a dispenser spawns a creature in front of the dispenser.
Baby creatures
If a creature has a baby form and the player uses an egg on an adult creature, a baby form of that creature will be spawned. [Java Edition only] Other creatures, such as Summoners, Vindicators, and Vexes do not have hatchlings.
Generators
All spawn eggs can be used in a creature spawn to change the creature it contains. Fish eggs are only generated if the generator is underwater.
Rename
A spawn egg can be renamed on an anvil and when spawning a creature it will appear with that name on its head. The name can be seen by targeting the creature within 5 blocks away. His name also appears in death messages when he kills a player. There are some names that contain special characteristics: if a rabbit egg is renamed "Toast", an exclusive skin will appear. Any creature such as "Dinnerbone" or "Grumm" causes the creature to appear face down. Renaming a vindicator "Johnny" makes it hostile to all creatures except other raiders. Renaming a sheep "jeb_" makes the sheep multi-colored (in a rainbow loop). This does not change the color of the wool obtained from the sheep.

Element data
Java Edition (Java Edition / JE)
- tag: The item's tag tag.
Player.dat format/Entity Spawners
Bedrock Edition
- tag: The item's tag tag.
- ItemIdentifier: The entity's string ID.
When using the / give command to get an egg, the numeric ID of an entity is needed; for example: / give spawn_egg 1 33 would yield an egg that would yield a creeper. For references, see Bedrock Edition # Data Values Entity IDs for the full list of IDs.
These eggs do not have colors (they are black) and they do not have a name, only «Generate» appears.
- The Ghost of the Ancient Guardian (120) can be obtained by command.
- The box ID generator egg stops the game.
