Behavior
The blocks are arranged in a three-dimensional grid of 1 cubic meter cells. Each cell generally contains exactly one block; Exceptions exist in the form of slabs, vines, layers of snow, turtle eggs, and sea pickles.
Together, the blocks and fluids build the game environment, and most can be harvested and used in various ways. Some blocks, such as earth and sandstone, are opaque and occupy their entire cubic meter, while other blocks, such as glass and flowers, are transparent or not solid. Explosions destroy some blocks more easily than others.
Some blocks emit light. The amount of light they emit varies widely. Opaque blocks completely block light, while transparent blocks cannot have an effect on light, block light, or simply weaken it.
Almost all blocks ignore gravity, with a few exceptions.
When broken, blocks emit sounds and particles associated with themselves, except in the following cases:
- When the block is removed by a piston.
- If the block is affected by gravity and falls into an invalid space [Java Edition only].
- Anvils that are destroyed by running out of durability or falling. Only particles are missing.
- If the block is carried away by a flowing fluid.
- If the block can be replaced by other blocks, and it is replaced.
- If the block is a rail, drive rail, detector rail, trigger rail, redstone cable, redstone comparator, or redstone repeater and its support block is removed.
- If the block is made of leaves and decomposes.
Blocks falling by gravity
These blocks do not have the ability to support themselves, and if their base breaks then they fall and are placed on the ground, unless there is a non-solid element in the place where they are going to fall. These blocks are: Sand, Red Sand, Gravel, Anvils, Dragon Eggs, Concrete Dust, Scaffolding (under certain circumstances, in others it just breaks), Layers of snow [Bedrock Edition only].
Blocks that emit light
Main article: Lighting
These blocks emit light in levels ranging from 0 to 15, depending on their type. Examples of these blocks are: Lighthouses, furnaces, blast furnaces, smokers, redstone lamps, marine lanterns, fire, soul fire, lanterns, soul lanterns, campfires, soul campfires, sea pickles, weeping obsidian, chests of ender, torches, redstone torches, soul torches.
Blocks that degrade light
Main article: Lighting
These blocks are transparent and allow light to pass through, however they all degrade one level less [Java Edition only], or degrade more levels [Bedrock Edition only]. This is due to the shape of the block, which is not complete, with a few exceptions, because they are configured to be transparent.
Size
Most solid blocks are 1 meter high (3.28084 feet), but certain blocks (especially slabs and stairs) have non-standard block heights.
A player can automatically climb from a lower height to a higher one if the difference is at most 0.67640812 (3/5) of a block or 1.9685 feet.
In addition, the world limit is 256 blocks / meters (839.895 feet), which means that if you reach higher ground then you will not be able to place any blocks.
Textures
The textures on the faces of the blocks are 16 × 16 pixels. Most blocks are proportionally one cubic meter by default, but their shape can be changed using models.
Most of the blocks have static textures, but these blocks are animated: water, lava, nether portal, end portal, end transporter portal, prismarine (slab; stairs; wall), sea lantern, magma block, seagrass , seaweed, fire, soul fire, lantern, soul lantern, campfire (lit), soul campfire (lit), blast furnace (lit), heater block [Bedrock Edition and Education Edition only], mushroom stem (not confuse with mushroom), hyphae, smoker (ignition), stone cutter and command block.
Using resource packs, the player can change the textures and resolution of the blocks, even if their texture is animated. They can also change the shapes of the blocks using models and the size of the blocks to any size with equal width and height, although sizes that have a power of two tend to work better.

Technical blocks
Technical blocks are blocks whose main functions are strictly linked to the use of other blocks. They cannot be acquired through normal play. Most of them cannot be obtained with commands and even external editors [Java Edition only], but others require commands or modifications to obtain them. They serve various purposes during in-game events. If acquired, they generally have a missing texture.
Many of these blocks have different representations in the inventory, which allow their placement or use; flint and steel are used to place fire, water and lava can be placed with their respective buckets, and blocks such as beds, doors, cakes, and flower pots have separate inventory items.

Curiosities
- Certain blocks can interpret positions that cannot be placed by normal means as a valid position. For example, a sign placed in the air via / setblock or via bugs remains in the air even when updated, until it is broken or a block is placed under it and breaks.
