Description
Mountain biomes feature steep terrain and reach higher elevations than any other biome in the game other than shattered savanna biomes. The surface is made of blocks of grass, stone, ore, and gravel. The standard mountain biome generally peaks at about Y level 110, although other variants may go higher. Because the weather is cold, the rain changes to snowfall above about Y 92, where layers of snow piled up in blocks form above that point, along with the water that freezes into ice. The grass and leaves are water-colored. Llamas can spawn in mountain biomes; They are the only places where llamas can spawn other than savannas. Additionally, emerald ore is generated exclusively in mountain biomes and Infested stone patches spawn below sea level.
Mountain biomes have some unusual features and formations compared to other biomes due to the terrain generation algorithm.
Floating blocks and even small floating islands are common, as are cantilevers and large waterfalls (occasionally even lavacas). This can create some impressive views at times. These oddities are magnified in shredded sheets.
Survival in mountain biomes can be challenging for beginners, as heights are often at risk of heavy damage from falls and higher elevations that bring snow and ice, but it can be quite easy once you acclimatize to the area and find or make a space flat enough for shelter. Llamas can also serve as useful pack animals when domesticated. However, the water must be protected by a light or ceiling to prevent freezing when above the snowfall line, and the player must be aware of their surroundings to avoid falling off steep cliffs, especially when fighting creatures. hostile. Care must also be taken when mining in mountain biomes, as infested stones are occasionally spawned; the player could be invaded by silverfish if they are not prepared.
Mountain biomes spawn within groups of cool and cold biomes, commonly found alongside taiga, forest, or plains biomes.
Variants
There are a total of ten variant mountain biomes, including one whose spawning has been discontinued on new worlds.

The biome of mountains o extreme hills [coming soon: JE 1.18] is the normal mountain variant. This biome features the standard stony and grassy terrain (with sporadically spawned oak and spruce trees [Java Edition only].
As with most mountain variants, flames can spawn here, and silverfish infested blocks and emerald ore spawn naturally.

HR wooded mountains they generate groves of oaks and firs. This biome is also generated independently as a thick separation when a desert borders a snowy biome.
In Java Edition, these biomes have higher elevations than normal mountains, peaking at approximately Y level 140.
While increased wood supply can be helpful, higher peaks increase the risk of fatal fall damage, especially if this variant spawns at the edge of a mountain range and borders a river or other low elevation biome.
Forested mountains use the same creature-spawning possibilities as mountains.

The variant of gravel mountains replace top layers of stone and grass with gravel throughout the landscape.
In Java Edition, its peaks are slightly higher than normal mountains, although not as high as forested mountains. Because gravel replaces most of the grass, trees spawn much less frequently, making this variant relatively sterile. Players must be careful when surfacing from underground in this biome, as the upper layers of gravel can pose a choking hazard.
Gravel mountains use the same creature spawn possibilities as mountains.

HR gravel mountains + it is a rare variant that is similar to gravel mountains. The peaks are still covered in gravel, but large valleys are often generated between the peaks. Differently, it is also independently generated as a thick separation when a desert lake borders a snowy biome, and in Java Edition, it features the much higher peaks of the Wooded Mountains. Trees are still quite rare in this biome, making it a difficult biome for survival, due to its barrenness combined with rugged terrain.
Gravel Mountains + use the same creature spawn possibilities as mountains.

The variant of mountain edge it is a variant not currently used. Similar to the jungle edge biome, it was a technical biome intended to provide a smooth transition from other biomes to the mountains. It is similar to the taiga biome, but with few oaks. The terrain was smoother and not as steep as normal mountains, with oaks and firs growing. This biome was phased out in the development of the Java Edition 1.7.2 update and is not generated naturally, although it can still be viewed using the Buffet world option]] [Java Edition only] or plugins [Bedrock Edition only ].
Mountain edges use the same creature spawn possibilities as mountains.

This section describes content that can be included in the Java Edition. This content has appeared in development versions of Java Edition 1.18, but the full update that contains it has not yet been released. This section contains content about features that are part of the Experimental Gameplay in Bedrock Edition. These features may be added in a future update, but require the "Caves & Cliffs" option enabled to be seen in the current version. There are 5 additional height-dependent sub-biomes that make up a mountain biome. Multiple biomes can occupy the same X and Z coordinates, varying only along the Y level. Coal, iron, and emerald ores can be found at higher elevations than other biomes. These biomes are bordered by forests or flower forests and do not generate stone shores when next to an ocean (the forest will simply cut through the ocean). These new mountains are spawned with plains, desert, forest, jungle, ocean, or snowy tundra as base biomes, which happen to be connected or even completely surrounded by those biomes.
